How Hail Can Damage Your Windscreen

Hail can destroy your vehicle's windscreen, especially during a summer storm. Wondering how hail might impact your vehicle? Read on for our helpful information, and learn what you can do to prevent significant damage and extensive repairs.

Even in the shortest storm, hailstones can cause great damage. This can include chips, cracks, or even damage to the structural integrity of your entire windscreen. If your windscreen is chipped or cracked, it will reduce visibility and become a safety hazard when getting behind the wheel - your life and the lives of others around you will be endangered. If your windscreen has a hole, your car is not roadworthy.

If hail starts to fall while you're driving, it's important to think about your safety and the safety of those around you. You can:

• Take cover before the storm: Not only will you not need to battle other motorists for shelter, but it's also safer.
• Slow down: If you're driving on a busy road, brake slowly to avoid losing control and to give other drivers enough warning.
• Pull over: If you can't find shelter, pull over. If your car is stationary, it will likely suffer less hail damage.
• Cover your windscreen: If it's safe for you to leave your car, cover your windscreen with a heavy blanket or your car's floor mats.
• Keep away from windows during the storm.
• Park in a garage: If you don't have a garage, choose a car cover with a foam interior to offer hail protection.

After the storm passes, inspect your car. Any damage means your visibility will be compromised, and any chips or cracks can become worse. Contact your insurer and an experienced repairer, like the team at Roadrunner Windscreens. Small chips or cracks not in your line of sight may be easily repaired. If damage is extensive or is on the driver's side of the windscreen, you'll likely need a replacement to avoid any imperfections in the finished product.
