How Big A Windscreen Crack Can Be Repaired?
Most drivers will experience windscreen chips or cracks at some point during their lives, but how do you know if they can be repaired or if the whole windscreen needs to be replaced?
In this guide, we run down how big a windscreen crack can be repaired and what factors are used to determine between a repair and a replacement.
Assessing The Crack
There is a lot more to consider than just size when it comes to windscreen cracks, so you will need to have it assessed by a professional before you can know for sure whether it can be repaired.
But to provide a quick answer, our general rule of thumb is that cracks smaller than 1cm can be repaired. Usually, cracks up to 4cm in length can also be repaired, but that's not a guarantee.
We will always try to repair instead of replacing to save you time and money, but the safety of the driver is paramount, which is why we need to assess other factors too.
Location Of The Crack
Where the crack is located on the windscreen is probably the most vital factor in deciding how big a crack can be repaired. If the crack is directly in the driver's line of sight, this poses a major safety risk, so the windscreen will have to be replaced.
There are similar rules if the crack is at the edge of the windscreen because this risks the structural integrity of the windscreen as a whole, especially if there are multiple chips or they're very deep.
Depth Of The Crack
Although your first instinct is to probably measure the length of the crack, it's actually the depth that is more important, although it's harder to evaluate.
The deeper the crack is, the more damage has been done that is unlikely to be safely repaired. A tiny crack that you can hardly see may require an entire replacement if it's very deep.
